Here are some photos from my trip today to Avery Island, site of the Tabasco pepper sauce factory. The island sits atop a salt dome and features a botanical garden created by the McIlhennys, the family who owns the island and the Tabasco company. There's a pagoda with an ancient Buddha statue from China, a gift from a friend of the original Mr. McIlhenny. There's also a rookery, built in the marsh to help the snowy egrets come back from near-extinction.

My lover and I have been to the island numerous times, and have encountered alligators and nutria rats about two feet long . Nothing is done to keep visitors and wildlife apart, except for signs that tell you alligators are dangerous. It is forbidden to slay either of these monsters on the island. Just as well! I asked, and was told they don't drop any Guild Wars gold when you kill them.
